Global objective

The global objective of the program is sustainable conservation of the dry forests of New Caledonia for everyone’s benefit, not only within the protected areas but on the entirety of the islands.

This objective has been elaborated in to an action plan to respond on one hand to the local conservation issues, and on the other hand to the sustainable management of natural resources contributing to the social and economic development of Caledonian communities.

The aim is to reverse the current trends and means of utilization of the Caledonian dry forests, which are for the most part situated on private land. This represents a major task: define, on the basis of partnerships, means of sustainable exploitation

Specific objective

Given the situation of sclerophyllous forest, the program proposes three levels of intervention on this ecosystem:

  • On the species level, protection of keystone species by protecting the floral procession and the habitats of the fauna and flora of the dry forests,
  • On the level of forest islets, by increasing their surface, by reducing the threats to an acceptable level, and by reconstituting their biodiversity,
  • On the level of blocks of dry forests, in order to group and connect them to nearby islets.

Results expected

To meet these objects in a sustainable manner, many activities have been identified to attain the following principal results:

  • Protection of the priority species and spaces.
  • Natural regeneration of the promoted dry forests.
  • Slash and burn agriculture put to an end.
  • Untimely fires controlled and reduced.
  • Obtain land with blocks of dry forests that have been selected for homogeneous management.
  • A public that is informed and aware.
